Details: Join Dr. Meg Bertoni as she provides information about violent societies. How do violent societies happen, and where is the tipping point between relative stability and violent turmoil? What are the red flags along the way? "Violent Societies" is about how relatively stable societies become violent ones--and, ultimately, through understanding the patterns of the process, how a society can recover from violence and restabilize. This session exposes the patterns of a "violentizing" society, briefly explores a few example cases and their essential lessons, identifies key points in the process and opportunities for exit points, and ultimately, offers some short- and long-term solutions.
About Dr. Meg Bertoni:
In addition to a cross-disciplinary career in higher education spanning nearly three decades, Dr. Meg Bertoni's consulting work has focused on problem-solving for both public and private sectors, from startups and small businesses to corporations, nonprofits, and governments. Her work includes high-level decision-making, such as for the government of Honduras in considering hurricane insurance, analysis of Enron's stranded energy assets for one of their receivers, ADA compliance for CompTIA's certification materials, and media penetration analysis for Public Radio International, among others. Her doctoral and post-doctoral work about the patterns of violent societies––specifically around how relatively stable societies unravel into violence and disarray––has been garnering attention in light of recent events. Dr. Bertoni holds a master's degree in World Religion and Conflict Resolution from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in International Studies, specializing in International Security and Nonlinear Dynamics, from the University of Denver's Korbel School of International Studies.
