Details: Do you find yourself stumbling through proper names like Xi Jinping, Huawei, and Xinjiang? The Chinese-speaking world is increasingly relevant to national security, but the complexity of the language can sometimes magnify imposter syndrome. This brief session will provide a foundation for understanding Mandarin so you can discuss international relations with more confidence. We will also practice some simple phrases to give you a taste of the language. At the end, there will be time to ask about specific phrases that are relevant to your field.
Dr. Megan Ammirati grew up in Beijing, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and currently holds a Ph.D. specializing in East Asian Languages and Cultures. She has served as a Mandarin instructor at the University of California, Davis and the Ohio State University where she specialized in teaching non-native speakers.
