Details: For Round one of the #NSGS Afrofuturism, Sci-fi, and epic fantasy book club we’ll be starting off with N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season ( The Broken Earth, Book 1). As the SOULar powered afrofuturism slow reading group and Firestorm Books & Coffee’s Visionary Readers Group are reading N.K. Jemisin this month, I’ll follow suit and roughly modeling the first meeting with materials from the latter (adjusting to reader turnout and direction accordingly). We’ll split the Fifth Season in half -
* Feb 24th: The Fifth Season, through Ch. 15 (p. 276)
* Mar 10th: The Fifth Season, Ch. 16 - 23 (p. 449)
If you would like to purchase a copy, I recommend looking for local BIPOC-owned bookstores. The Broken Earth trilogy is still available at this small, black owned bookstore as well.

Courtesy of Chika Okoye (chikaokoye@gmail.com) who is hosting the VRG group reading of the Fifth Season, here are prompts and extra materials to explore as you read the book, if you so choose.
“NK Jemisin’s tremendous powers are hopefully shaking your foundations by now. Come Monday, February 15th ready to discuss what moves you as you make your way through The Fifth Season. I appreciate each of you sharing your perspectives and questions in our sessions — these discussions enhance all of our learning.
Be sure to check out Jemisin’s 2018 Hugo award acceptance speech to hear where the trilogy’s themes come from, in her own words. Plus, she slaps down her haters in a hugely satisfying way! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lFybhRxoVM&feature=youtu.be
