Details: Since 2018, the Nicaraguan government, under Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo’s command, has decided to rule with blanket impunity. Their systematic use of force, criminalization of democracy, economic populism, and disregard for commitments to the international community have led to continued human rights violations, greater migration flows, and a deepening economic crisis. There is a pervasive culture of fear in Nicaragua. Furthermore, their continued isolation and withdrawal from international obligations has, by definition, turned Nicaragua into a rogue state. Of primary importance for the international agenda going forward, is leveling the political playing field against impunity, creating conditions that can restore rights to the people and secure the release of political prisoners. The United States in particular, through the recently signed Renacer Act, has the potential to make credible political commitments and apply necessary economic pressure.
What more can the international community do in the face of continued repression and impunity? To what extent has the Renacer Act been successfully implemented? Can the Organization of American States ensure that diplomacy prevails?
The Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to invite you to a panel discussion of experts, who will weigh in on the role of the United States and the international community in promoting a democratic transition in Nicaragua. The panel will discuss the ideas presented in a new report by Manuel Orozco, director of the Migration, Remittances, and Development program, which outlines recommendations to the international community by way of workable solutions.
