Walking Away From Omelas

Link to Session

In her short story "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas", Ursula K. Le Guin uses fiction to explore the dynamics of the greater good, collateral damage, and ethical decisions. In a fictional utopia that exists only because of the perpetual torture of one child, Le Guin asks the reader: if you knew about the torture, would you walk away from utopia? A useful thought experiment for those in the national security space, discussing the choice to walk away - or to stay- is instructive and challenging.
